Designing a calm translation UI on Android

Translation apps often cram controls into every corner. We approached VocatAI with the opposite instinct: fewer competing surfaces, clearer conversation threading, and typography tuned for quick scanning—not decoration.

Alternating bubbles with explicit source and target labels reduce cognitive load during back-and-forth chats. We bias toward generous spacing and tap targets so the UI fades into the background when someone is trying to catch a train or order coffee.

Dark mode is not an afterthought. Borders, surfaces, and chat chrome were adjusted together so contrast stays readable without harsh glare at night. If something looked fine in light mode but muddy in dark, we reworked it.

This is an evolving baseline: as real usage patterns emerge, we will keep tightening layouts based on feedback—not feature checklists alone.
